Water & Wastewater Flow Measurement Solutions

Water & Wastewater Flow Measurement Solution Overview

Water and wastewater treatment systems require different flow measurement technologies for raw water, sewage, sludge, reclaimed water, chemical dosing, aeration air and steam. Electromagnetic flowmeters are the primary choice for conductive wastewater and sludge because they have no moving parts and can handle suspended solids and flocs. Turbine flowmeters are more suitable for clean water, reclaimed water and low-impurity chemical liquids. Vortex flowmeters are mainly used for saturated steam, compressed air and other clean gas conditions.

This solution is intended for municipal wastewater treatment plants, industrial wastewater stations, waterworks, reclaimed-water reuse stations and pump-station pipe networks. It helps engineers, system integrators and project purchasers select the appropriate flowmeter according to process section, medium characteristics, pipe conditions, power supply, communication method and maintenance requirements.

DN600 Underground Pipeline Selection Note

For a DN600 underground water-supply or wastewater pipeline, an electromagnetic flowmeter should normally be evaluated first when the liquid is conductive. Large-diameter pipelines can use a full-bore or insertion electromagnetic meter depending on accuracy, installation and project-cost requirements. For underground or humid installations, the meter structure, cable sealing and required protection level should be confirmed according to the actual installation environment before final selection.

General Medium Adaptation Principles

Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Suitable for conductive liquids with conductivity of at least 5μS/cm. It can be used for wastewater and sludge containing solids and flocs. It is not suitable for gas, oil or extremely low-conductivity pure water.

Turbine Flowmeter

Suitable for clean, low-impurity liquids such as clean water, reclaimed water and chemical solutions. It should not be selected for high-sediment or high-sludge media because of impeller jamming and wear risk.

Vortex Flowmeter

Suitable for gas, saturated steam and clean low-pressure liquids. Measurement can become unstable when the medium contains impurities, viscous substances or a large number of bubbles.

On-Site Measurement Difficulties

Foam and Bubbles

Bubbles are easily entrained in biochemical effluent and recirculation pipelines. Turbine and vortex meters may show severe flow fluctuation. The source document states that electromagnetic meters have better anti-bubble performance and can operate normally when the bubble proportion is ≤10%.

Medium Adhesion and Scaling

Sludge and oily wastewater tend to adhere to pipe walls. Turbine impellers can become stuck by sludge. Electromagnetic meters can use rubber liners and removable electrodes, while vortex probes may be affected by fouling.

Corrosion

For acidic wastewater and chlorinated effluent, correct liner and electrode material selection is critical.

No Power Supply / Remote Well Chambers

Underground pipe networks and unattended pump stations without mains power require battery-powered instruments.

Long-Distance Communication

Where instruments are far from the central PLC or SCADA system, priority can be given to 4-20mA, RS485 Modbus and NB-IoT wireless transmission.

Solid Particles

Sediment in raw water and sludge can rapidly wear turbine meters and erode vortex probes.

Negative / Low Pressure and Pulsating Flow

Pulsating flow at pump outlets can cause measurement drift for turbine and vortex meters.

Installation and Access Scheme

Electromagnetic Flowmeter

Pipe installation: Flange installation. The source document recommends 5D upstream and 3D downstream straight-pipe sections and avoiding positions immediately after pumps or elbows. Sludge pipelines are preferably installed horizontally. Insertion electromagnetic meters can be considered for large-diameter pipelines to reduce project cost.

Open-channel inlet: Use an open-channel electromagnetic meter or ultrasonic open-channel flowmeter with suitable weir/flume accessories.

Turbine Flowmeter

Flange or clamp installation. The source document recommends 10D upstream and 5D downstream straight-pipe sections. A filter should be installed upstream to prevent impeller jamming, and horizontal installation is required.

Vortex Flowmeter

Flange installation with 10D upstream and 5D downstream straight-pipe sections. Steam applications should use suitable insulation and heat tracing to reduce condensed-water impact on the probe. Severe negative-pressure fluctuation in gas pipelines should be avoided.

Power Supply

  • Conventional indoor pump room: AC220V.

  • Underground wells / remote sites without mains power: Lithium battery supply; the source document gives a 3-5 year service-life reference.

  • Explosion-proof areas: Intrinsically safe DC24V supply.

Output, Protocol and Central-Control Access

  • Analog: 4-20mA for PLC analog modules.

  • Digital: RS485 Modbus RTU for multi-instrument bus access.

  • Wireless: NB-IoT / 4G upload to SCADA or cloud platforms.

  • Pulse output: Total-flow measurement and trade settlement.

Commissioning, Calibration and Maintenance

Commissioning

Check grounding before power-on. Reliable grounding is mandatory for electromagnetic meters because wastewater applications are susceptible to electrical interference. Verify medium parameters, measuring range, liner and electrode configuration. Conduct zero calibration and communication commissioning to confirm normal upload of real-time and cumulative flow. For steam vortex meters, input the required temperature and pressure compensation parameters.

Calibration

  • Factory delivery: Third-party calibration certificate.

  • On-site: Online zero calibration and periodic inspection. The source document recommends annual inspection for trade and environmental monitoring points according to local metrology requirements.

  • Offline: Calibration using a water-flow standard device.

Maintenance

  • Electromagnetic meter: Regularly clean sludge from electrodes and inspect liner wear.

  • Turbine meter: Periodically clean filters and inspect impeller wear.

  • Vortex meter: Clean deposits from the probe and inspect heat-tracing systems.

Delivered Documents

Factory calibration certificate, installation manual and quality certificate.

After-Sales Support

On-site installation and commissioning guidance, free maintenance within the warranty period, remote fault troubleshooting, spare-parts supply and optional annual maintenance service.

How to Choose a Flowmeter for Water and Wastewater Applications

For conductive wastewater, sewage, sludge and dirty water, electromagnetic flowmeters should normally be evaluated first. For clean water, reclaimed water and low-impurity chemical dosing, turbine flowmeters can provide high accuracy where the medium is clean enough to protect the rotor. For aeration air, compressed air and saturated steam, vortex flowmeters are the more suitable technology among these three options.

Before final selection, confirm pipe diameter, expected flow range, conductivity, solids content, corrosion, pressure, temperature, available straight-pipe length, installation environment, power supply and required communication protocol.
